A 5-day trek into the heart of the Makay region, an area of dramatic sandstone gorges, soaring mountains and untouched lakes and forests. Very few people visit this particularly unhabited area, much of which remains to be explored.

This is a challenging trek for those with a real sense of adventure but the rewards in terms of stunning scenery and idyllic campsite under star-filled skies are plentiful.

We recommend combining this tour with a few days in the beautiful surrounding of Isalo National Park where there are a number of comfortable lodges to relax after your adventure in the wilderness of Makay.

This morning, we follow the dry bed of a lost river which takes us deep into the Makay. Then we ascend steeply to a high ridge with spectacular views. We overlook a hidden gorge where if we are lucky we will be treated to the spectacle of hundreds of fruit bats in flight. Then we follow the high ridge to our lunch stop overlooking tow lakes below after which we descend very steeply to a narrow canyon which we follow to our idyllic beach campsite.

Day 6

This morning we continue to follow our canyon, wading through shallow water as it gets narrower and narrawer until, in some places, it is only a few feet wide. Then it gradually opens up again to a wide dry river bed. We hike up to a viewpoint from where we can see typical Makay landscape. Then we follow another canyon to another secluded beach campsite near a lake.
